One never need be sympathetic to the poet, they will garner it or not by the words they write and the image conveyed.

But one has to take a historical perspective on Guest's most important target for his poetry. The Detroit audience of 1916, for the most part factory workers and housewives newly minted to America. In this particular piece he writes in a soft meter but he also writes for a reading, at least semi-literate in English audience. HOME is phonetically written for that audience.

I personally have never been able to master this piece aloud, yet I get the feeling Guest would have done a fine job of reading it on his decade long radio program.

I understand that a modern day novelist (Handler) as are other people, not touched by Guest. He is from a simpler time in our life as Americans. Pre WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, and most important of all The Cold War. That being the case I may be overly generous to him in my appreciation of his work, but being somewhat familiar with his large body of work and the millions of people he entertained with his verse, both written and spoken, I still have to give him kudos, even if it is from a day the sun has set on.

Be Wellthe walking manhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10058913927297370740noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8145150938922509338.post-50452914047698118632014-03-19T16:46:51.015-07:002014-03-19T16:46:51.015-07:00I think he's talking about himself and his own...I think he's talking about himself and his own identity crisis. He's saying in an oblique way that he doesn't know who he truly is and this nagging thought continues to bother him, as the answer continues to elude him. He'd rather it didn't bother him but it's in is nature to wonder. It really is a wonderful poem that can be interpreted in so many ways but strip it down and I think it's simply a "Who am I?" conundrum.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00599066573297210171noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8145150938922509338.post-24551226018601079172013-12-12T11:47:23.518-08:002013-12-12T11:47:23.518-08:00WOW! Many poems are misattributed, and I take that seriously. Ogden Nash wrote many poems, but contrary to popular belief he did not write every comic poem in his era.

He wrote a poem called "Common Cold" http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/common-cold/

One called "The Sniffle"
http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/the-sniffle/

And another called "The Germ"
http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/the-germ/

But there are no reputable websites that link this poem with Ogden Nash.

In his New York Times obituary, it says that along with being a comedian, Merwyn Bogue was an accomplished musician and that he enjoyed comic poetry. While they don't say outright that he wrote this poem, it is at least implied.

http://www.nytimes.com/1994/06/08/obituaries/ish-kabibble-comic-and-cornetist-86.html

I could believe that one of his joke writers came up with some or part of the poem, but Ish Kabibble is the only person I've ever seen reliably credited with it.
Karen Ahlstromhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08494601453714239376noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8145150938922509338.post-85506260199587403722013-01-30T16:21:21.832-08:002013-01-30T16:21:21.832-08:00Ish Kabibble was a comedian, but the poet that you...Ish Kabibble was a comedian, but the poet that you're looking for that Wrote "How you catch a cold." was from the same era.
Please look up Ogden Nash, and change your website to respect the true author. I had never heard the whole poem till now. Marianne unfortunately had to experience the heartbreak of a lover who made a promise and lied and went away, so she says the poem once more but with a sense of what love should be and not what Willoughbe made of it at the end.giparihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12741337484371360504noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8145150938922509338.post-12416426958836922092012-07-26T14:08:28.311-07:002012-07-26T14:08:28.311-07:00I'm so glad you had this song posted. Think of Kipling ...Ya, that was a little bit harsh. Think of Kipling in the time he was in, he really didn’t know better. From his understanding, it was the whites who held the technology of the steam boat, rail roads, and weapons to be able to maybe “fix their captives society.” The captives didn’t have the industrialization or modernization that was going on in America, Europe, Japan, and other places. Do remember there are different criticisms of this poem, but also keep in mind what was going on in history at this time.Hannah @HannahHandmadehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08356656318952317953noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8145150938922509338.post-31291749824202640052012-03-16T21:40:13.902-07:002012-03-16T21:40:13.902-07:00Karen:
